Viva Voce

Viva Voce's husband and wife team of Anita and Kevin Robinson
We start and end Part 1 with Viva Voce. They are husband-and-wife team Kevin and Anita Robinson, who made Portland their hometown in 2001 by way of Muscle Shoals, AL. In what could rightfully be called purely 21st-century indie pop/post-rock, they've created a smooth blend of freewheeling psych tapestry on their latest album Get Yr Blood Sucked Out on Barsuk Records. It's their first release on the Seattle-based label after prior releases on their own label, Amore!Phonics, and their 2004 follow-up, The Heat Can Melt Your Brain (Minty Fresh), which garnered considerable international attention.

Next up are The Shins, big enough to land prime spots on mainstream film and TV, and cool enough to have played at 2004's PDX Pop Now!, which is where we get our track for this episode. Their next album, Wincing the Night Away, is slated for January 2007 release on SubPop.

John Weinland is a local songwriting group which includes John Adam Weinland Shearer (vocals, guitar), Aaron "Rantz" Pomerantz (dobro, mandolin, vibes, lap steel, accordion), Rory Brown (bass), Ian Lyles (drums, percussion, banjo) and Paul Christensen (keyboards). Their 2006 album Demersville is a collection of wistful, delicately executed folkish songs, on which Adam Selzer (Norfolk and Western, M Ward), who also produced the album at Type Foundry, and Rachel Blumberg (Norfolk and Western, M Ward, The Decemberists) make guest appearances.

Dr. Theopolis

Dr. Theopolis' Mr. Fabulous, here to funk you up!

"What Zaphod Beeblebrox was to Intergalactic alcoholism Dr. Theopolis is to gettin' down." So sayeth Ezra Holbrook of the 8-piece rap/funk/R&B ensemble that is Dr. Theopolis. The collaboration includes Portland musicians whose projects include The Decemberists, Lael Alderman, and The American Girls, as well as Little Sue, our own Jeremy Wilson, Wyatt Herb, and Rollie Tussing, to name a few. They've got two albums out, The Voice Of The Future (2002) and Astronomical (2004), on the Pimpbionic label, and have plans for a third.

The Turn-Ons

After 9 eventful years that included shows with bands such as The Strokes, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Imperial Teen, as well as critical acclaim for their previous releases, Seattle's The Turn-Ons recorded their latest album, Parallels, with producer Paul Mahajan (The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, T.V. On the Radio). Their catchy brand of space-glam-Brit rock has been turning heads in the US and abroad.
Floater
photo of Floater Portland art-metal trio Floater just released their eighth LP, Stone By Stone, which features refined and stylish guitar work by Dave Amador against the signature sound that Rob Wynia (vocals, bass) and Pete Cornett (drums) have developed since 1993.
