Good To Be Alive Show - September 22, 2008 |
The Naysayers
"Some Other Place" |
The Naysayers, capitalize on the songwriting talents of Dennis Winslow and Rod Landahl. Both are professional writers and have songs in a number of hit TV shows and the like. The Naysayers are a country tinged rock band from Portland, OR. They have been at it for the past five years, throwing truly indie shows at their own staging company HQ. They have an upcoming CD release party on Oct 26 at the Peacock Bar and Grill in Corvallis.
Band Members:
Dennis Winslow (vocals and guitar)
Rod Langdahl (vocals, guitar and keyboard)
Rick Langdahl (bass, vocals)
Kelly Bilyeu (drums)
Jim Fisher (guitar)
Bob Logue (guitar, vocals)

Amadan
"The Old North End" from the CD
Pacifica |
Amadan are one of Portland's foremost Irish Rock bands. They are influenced by the Dropkick Murphys. Amadan's sound isn't quite as full on, drunk guitar chords yell along as the Murphy's, owing as much a debt of gratitude to the folk sounds of the Chieftains. But there's no shortage of live energy here either! Amadan ads traditional Irish instruments to the mix, creating an interesting sonic layer above the mesh of guitars, bass and drums. They have a new CD out now titled Pacifica, available at a record store near you..
Band Members:
Eric Tonsfeldt: lead vocals, guitar
Chad Marks-Fife: fiddle, whistle, mandolin, background vocals
Kevin Pardew: guitar, background vocals
Billy Tollner: bass, background vocals
David Fender: drums, background vocals

The Legendary Pink Dots
"A World With No Mirrors" from the CD
Plutonium Blonde |
The Legendary Pink Dots
hail from the Netherlands. Their psych goth experimental garage music is a real treat. They're on tour and will be stopping in Portland on Oct 17 to play a set at Berbatis. Their discography stretches back to 1981, and features many limited editions and cassette only releases. They're obviously dedicated to the music more than anything else, as mainstream success has eluded them to some degree. But that's what usually makes the best psych music: uninhibited by commercial concerns, the the best psych music artists are free to explore the fringe elements of what they do without fear. The Legendary Pink Dots are a great example of unique and fearless Euro-psych.
Band members:
Edward Ka-Spel
Martijn DeKleer
Niels VanHoorn

Slow Gun Shogun
"Evangeline" from the CD
Eve, Adam, & the Apple |
Slow Gun Shogun is a southern U.S.A based one-man band sort of affair. AJ Martin, the leader who, "writes the songs, (and) runs the show," puts together some pretty cool, left of center rock n roll on his latest recording, "Eve, Adam, and the Apple". His songs are performed in the live setting by a band of revolving players that will follow him on tour this fall through Tennesee, South Carolina and Arkansas.
Band members:
AJ Martin: vocals, guitars, harmonica, stomp box, writes the songs, runs the show
WITH:
Miss Palanti: drums and backing vocals on "Eve, Adam, & the Apple" album, silent treatment
Charlie: occasional live drums, broseph vibe
Player 1: recording engineer, tambourine, backing vocals, Busch 30 pack on "Eve, Adam, & the Apple" album
Donovan Foote: artwork, occasional four string guitar twanger

Susurrus Station
"Top Down Town" |
Susurrus Station makes strange minimalist desert noir music. They are currently hard at work on a new recording set to be titled "Flash In The Pan". Look for them live in the Portland area this fall. For now however, be sure to check out their MySpace site to hear more of their songs.
Sara also plays violin and sings in the hauntingly beautiful and dynamic ZOUAVES, who played at Septembers MastanMusic Hour - Club Showcase. Watch for their show soon!
Band members:
sara & j & +++

Rogue Motel
"Little Waves" from the CD
Daylight Breaking |
Not many upcoming indie bands have the guts to list Journey as a prevalent influence these days. Rogue Motel, however, proudly list Steve Perry and Co., along with REM as primary influences. They're an unabashed commercial radio ready rock band. Frontman/songwriter Matthew Kendall reflects the 80's and 90's in his androgenous rock tenor vocal style, calling to mind Joey Tempest (Europe - yep, that Europe, i.e. The Final Countdown) and Linda Perry circa mid 90's 4 Non Blondes. He's backed by tunefull guitars, bass, drums and keys.
Band Members:
Matthew Kendall
Jeremy Kaplan
Adam Hill
Reginald Bradley
Michael Wehling
