The THIS IS A GREAT SHOW! Show
The Old Believers
"The Trouble" from the CD
Eight Golden Greats

The Old Believers hail from Portland, via Kenai, Alaska. "These eight songs were all we had left to document our leaving home," Nelson Kempf says of his collaboration with girlfriend Keeley Boyle. Simultaneously recalling Simon and Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen, Modest Mouse, and the Raveonettes, their gospel influenced indie folk is perfect for an evening with your lover. Due out July 10, (with a CD release party at Berbatis Pan scheduled for the same day), "Eight Golden Greats" is a beautiful, strangely mature recording for a duo of such tender young ages of 19 and 20 years. Go get this record, and see them when they come to your west coast town on tour this summer, because they're really great.

Band members:
Nelson Kempf- Vocals, Guitar, Lap Steele
Keeley Boyle - Vocals, Guitar, Violin

Visit this band on the web at MySpace for more info and such.

Hillfolk Noir
"Voodoo" from the CD
Diggin Songs
Hillfolk Noir, features the songwriting, vocals and guitar work of Travis Ward (Doug Martsch, Junkyard Bandstand) paired with the vocals and drums of his wife, Alison Ward. Their latest CD, "Diggin Songs" is packed with 17 songs of dark, folk-based murder ballads mixed with spaced out guitars. For the most part, it was recorded in a small house in the north end of their hometown of Boise, ID. Hillfolk Noir will be on tour this summer, including a stop in Portland for the debut MastanMusic Hour - Club Showcase at Kelly's Olympian on July 11 w/ Dry County Crooks and the Dirty Birds.

Band:
Travis Ward- vocals, guitar
Alison Ward- vocals, cocktail drums
Mike Waite- upright bass

Rene' Ormae-Jarmer

Portland Cello Project
"Hands in Pockets" from the CD
Portland Cello Project
The Portland Cello Project strives to introduce folks to an alternative side of the cello. Collaborating with local songwriters as well as covering some bizarre songs, including GnR's "Sweet Child O' Mine" and Britney's "Toxic", they are doing just that. Laura Gibson, Coquille, Oregon's contribution to the Portland music scene, offers her captivating voice and original song "Hands In Pockets" on the Portland Cello Project's self titled CD.

The Band:
Cellist include - Heather Broderick, Rob Brooks, Galen Cohen, Gideon Freudmann, Anna Fritz, Kevin Jackson, Douglas Jenkins, Justin Kagen, Allegra M, Sonja Myklebust, Catherine Odell, Tony Rogers, Skip Von Kuske, and Erin Winemiller

Astrophagus
"Do You Have Three Settings?" from the CD
For Boating
photo on mastanmusic.com "This is our life, try not to laugh," says Jason Cain of Astrophagus. Judging by the tone of their new disc, "For Boating", the Cain Brothers lives are no laughing matter. Moody and emotional, the Danver band's verbed out epics take place in the canyons of the mind traversed by Mazzy Star and Rain Parade.

Band members:
Jason Cain - Guitar, Piano, Vocals
David Kurtz - Drums, Electronic Drum Performance
Joshua Cain - Keyboards, Electronics
Chris White - Bass, Accordion
