The Welcome to 2008 Show!!! |
The Escapists
"Bulldog" from the CD
Self Titled EP |
Instrumental Post Rock group The Escapists features former members of Portland's Torcher. The Escapists are great. Their guitar driven soundscapes would be a perfect compliment to a cloudy drive around town. Reminiscent of the ambient sides of My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth, their self titled debut EP
delivers plenty of vibe. They have several shows coming up in Portland this winter. Check out their calendar at
The Escapists Myspace page.
Band members:
Kevin Friedman: Guitar, keyboards.
Christopher Douglas: Drums.
Todd Chatalas: Bass.
Twayn Williams: Pedal Steel Guitar.
Visit The Escapists on the web at theirMyspace Page for more
info on the band.

The Young Fresh Fellows
"Barkys Spiritual Store" from the CD
Because We Hate You |
The Young Fresh Fellows
have been legends on the NW music scene for over 20 years. Their obscure brand of sunny and lyrical power pop brings to mind great bands like the Cars, Cheap Trick, and the Beatlres. Frontman and visionary Scott Mcaughy currently lives in Portland and gigs frequently with REM and the Minus 5, his band with Peter Buck. "Barkys Spiritual Store" is from the 2001 double CD release on Mammoth records featuring both the Fellows and the Minus 5 in an audio battle.
The Band Is:
Jim - bass
Kurt - guitar
Tad - drums
Scott - voice, guitar

The High Violets
"Love Is Blinding" from the CD
Satellite Remixes |
Everyones favorite Portland shoegazers The High Violets
have recently released a fab new CD titled the Satellite Remixes. It is a collection of, well, remixes out now on Reverb Records. We are proud to say that Sam and Jeremy were honored to record the vocal tracks on several of the cuts on the High Violets current long player, To Where You Are, including "Love is Blinding". We loved this remix and we think you will too. (Photo By Andy Batt)
Check out more info about this band too at The High Violets Myspace Page

Pilar French
"Closer" from the CD
Butterflies |
Pilar French and her band make music from a blues and folk influenced perspective. Their spaced out radio ready rock is a crowd pleaser and regularly finds them on stages
at concert halls and clubs. In addition to her work with the band, Pilar French performs as a solo singer /songwriter. Her new CD, "Butterflies" is available now from the Pilar French Myspace page.

Barons In Trees
"Song 97" from the CD
EP |
"The name of the band takes inspiration from the novel by magical realist Italo Calvino entitled The Baron in the Trees. In the story, a young boy, Cosimo, altogether decides that he has had enough: of family, of his proper role in society, of decorum, and literally, the ground. He escapes to the trees", (Barons In Trees Bio) .Psychedelic chamber folk group Barons in Trees joins the current crop of well dressed Portland bands with their new self titled/released CD. Founded by New York City transplants and husband/wife team, Karen and Kyle Lange they list influences such as Joni Mitchell and Sufgan Stevens as well as Arcade Fire and Devotchka. See them live this winter at the Mississippi pizza pub.
Barons in Trees is:
Carley Baer (vocals, guitar, plastic bag)
Galen Cohen (cello guest star)
Kevin Jackson (cello everyday star)
Karen Lange (keyboards, clarinet)
Kyle Lange (vocals, guitar, beatboxing)

Bad Dates
"Anywhere" from the CD
Prime Mates |
"Bad Dates describe themselves as a
"funky, eclectic and always surprising ensemble". Featuring Fred Stevenson on guitar, Talbot Guthrie on drums, Afro-Q-Ben on Bass and Danny East on guitar, banjo and ukulele, they play a diverse array of music in their band. "Rock, ska, reggae, country & western, ballads and Blues, " are all staples of the Dates repertoire. Their new self released CD is called "Prime Mates" and is available now from CD Baby. | Jessica Stiles |

The music of Jessica stiles embodies the definition of "Americana". Her solo work seamlessly blends elements of the jazz of her childhood, with folk, blues, country, and traditional songs from the British Isles. With her "Jessica Stiles Band" she explores more of the country side of things, in the honky-tonk tradition of the late 40's and early 50's.
To accompany her in our show, she invited long-time friend and collaborator Dylan-Thomas Vance to play. She even managed to coax our own Jeremy Wilson to sit in on guitar on one blues-tinged number, "Two Flat Tires".
Tune in to part 2 of Episode 41 of the MastanMusic Hour to hear an exclusive preview of songs that will be featured on her forthcoming release. Catch Jessica at 10:30 wednesday January 23rd at Laurelthirst Tavern where she will be accompanied by Dylan-Thomas Vance (lap guitar) and stand-up bass player Jason Honl. You can also hear Jessica performing with her full band live on Friday Feb. 22nd 2008 at Mock Crest Tavern.
